Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser Review

About 2 weeks ago I was in Shoppers Drug Mart and saw the new Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser, and decided to pick it up. Unfortunately, Shoppers likes to hike up the prices sometimes, so I ended up paying around $11 for the tube. I was going to wait and go to Walmart (which I highly recommend you do) because I knew it would only be about half the price there, but my Walmart is usually out of stock of…well, everything I want. So I grabbed it anyway and I’m pretty glad I did.

Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser with Blur Technology

baby skinIt claims to have ‘blur technology’ which will instantly reduce the look of pores and give you smooth-looking skin. I have tried the POREfessional, and while it is a similar product, I don’t think it’s exactly a dupe. The Baby Skin is a bit thicker in my opinion, and it is clear unlike the POREfessional which is tinted. Honestly though, the POREfessional is $36 in Canada for a 0.75 fl. oz tube, which I find a little bit ridiculous. This is why I have only tried and never bought the POREfessional, because it really doesn’t work well enough for me to think that is anywhere near worth it. Baby Skin comes in a 0.67 fl. oz. tube.

Math time! At $36 for 0.75 fl. oz, that means you’re getting approximately 0.02 fl. oz. per dollar for the POREfessional. Even paying $11 for my Baby Skin tube (which contains 0.67 oz), I got about 0.06 fl. oz. per dollar. It seems minimal, but when you use a product every day it can really build up.

As for the quality of the product, I find it does do what it says it does in that it blurs the look of pores and smooths skin. No, it isn’t a miracle worker–I have visible pores in my T-zone and it didn’t completely ‘erase’ them, but it definitely did lessen the appearance. I also feel like my makeup looked better with this on than it did without, as the unevenness was not as noticeable and it didn’t cling to every single imperfection. It smoothed my skin prior to applying foundation, which I found lasted quite well on top of it. I do get a little bit oily in my T-zone, and this product neither worsened nor improved that to my knowledge. It feels very soft and velvety on due to the fact that it is silicone-based. It isn’t greasy, didn’t clog my pores, and feels comfortable on the skin. It doesn’t have a scent, which I usually aim for with makeup products as I have quite sensitive skin.

The back of the tube tells you to “SMOOTH onto areas with visible pores”. I’m not sure why it was so important to capitalize the word smooth, because I’ve heard lots of people say it’s actually better to pat it on first and then smooth it out gently. I really don’t know if it makes a huge difference whether you smooth or pat, but I do a little bit of both.

It also says you can wear it with or without makeup, but since it’s clear, it doesn’t really make sense to me to wear it without makeup.

Pros:

  • Works well under makeup as a primer
  • Much cheaper than high-end alternatives
  • Feels extremely soft
  • Blurs pores without clogging them
  • Not greasy
  • Odourless

Cons:

  • May seem a little bit heavy compared to other similar products
  • Doesn’t contain Cyclopentasiloxane, the main ingredient in other similar products like the POREfessional and Smashbox Photo Finish Primer

Overall, I like this product and I think the results are good for the price. You don’t need much to cover your problem areas because a little bit can spread pretty far. I’m happy with this, but I’ve never really been one to jump up and down for pore-reducing products because I find their claims to be pretty grandiose. I think what’s really important is finding the proper skin care routine to help keep your pores clean and minimized, and only then to start applying these kinds of products. I wouldn’t say this is exactly a dupe for any other products, although it is similar. If you’re looking for an affordable alternative to high-end pore minimizers, I’d say try this out and see how you like it first.

Have any of you tried Baby Skin, and what did you think? Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for reading ♥

As a side note: I tried to get pictures of it on my face, but my camera is just not good enough for that. I am waiting on a new camera though, so my blog pictures will improve soon hopefully. :)
